New Yorkers should check their refrigerators for recalled green onions that may contain salmonella, according to a recall alert. posted by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on October 18.

Church Brothers Farms has issued a voluntary recall of 1,271 cases of green onions after a single product sample collected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency indicated the presence of salmonella. Affected products were shipped to a small number of retail and foodservice customers in Canada and 11 US states, including New York. No illness was reported as of October 18.

What products have been recalled?

  • Brothers of the Church: Green Onions Iceless 4×2 pound Regular Church Brothers Mexico, lot code CB272378, sold in a clear bag with the product code located on the front of the bag
  • Trader Joe’s: Green Onion Iceless 24×6 Ounces Regular Trader Joe’s Mexico, lot code CB272378 with a pack date of September 25, 2024, sold in a branded retail bag with the pack date label on the back of the bag
  • Imperial Fresh: Green Onion Iceless 4×2 pound Regular, lot code CB272378, sold in a clear bag with the product code located on the front of the bag

Salmonella symptoms to watch out for

Most people infected with salmonella have diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, the CDC said, symptoms that begin six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria.

And while most people recover without treatment after four to seven days, some people—such as children younger than five, adults 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems—may experience longer illness. severe that require medical treatment or hospitalization.

What to do if you purchased the recalled products

Throw them away, the FDA says, and don’t consume the affected product.
