CNN Bans Ryan Girdusky. Finally, a stand for civilization

play

Ryan Girdusky made a shockingly inappropriate comment live on CNN Monday night and was fired from the network for it — he jumped during a commercial break, no less.

Good.

During “CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip,” the panelists engaged in a free-for-all talking about Donald Trump’s hateful rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Mehdi Hasan, the former MSNBC host, said he was used to people calling him anti-Semitic because of his support for the Palestinians.

Girdusky, a Trump supporter, said: “I hope your beeper doesn’t go off.”

oh come on

This was a reference to the Israeli military operation that blew up pagers carried by Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, killing at least 37 people and injuring nearly 3,000, according to CNN.

What did Ryan Girdusky say on CNN?

In other words, Girdusky called Hasan a terrorist.

“Did you just say I should die?” said Hasan, outraged. “Did you just say I should be killed on CNN?”

The panel erupted and Phillip tried to regain control. “This is completely out of pocket,” she told Girdusky. “You know that.” Girdusky apologized, but neither Hasan nor the other members of the group were having it.

After a break, a somber Phillip returned to face the camera and apologized to viewers. She said Girdusky was no longer on the panel. “It was a line that was crossed there and it’s not acceptable to me,” she said. “It’s not acceptable to us on this network.”

Girdusky responded with more vitriol

CNN later issued a statement saying, “There is no place for racism or bigotry at CNN or on our show.” It also read, “Ryan Girdusky will not be welcomed back to our network.”

Again, good.

So how did Girdusky respond? Pretty much as you’d think. I mean, instead of apologizing, he doubled down on the hate and attacks.

“You can stay on CNN if you falsely call every Republican a Nazi and took money from the Qatari funded media,” he said in a post on X (where else?). “Apparently you can’t get on CNN if you make a joke. I’m glad America can see what CNN stands for.”

I am too. Because in this case, it represented doing the right thing — refusing to let a partisan hack try to intimidate another guest with racist threats just to score points with Trump’s base. However, Girdusky inadvertently showed the American what he also represents.

Opposing views matter, on cable news and everywhere else. But as civilization dwindles to a depth by increasingly racist and bigoted behavior from Trump on down, there must be consequences for actions. Otherwise, the bullies have their way. If calling someone a terrorist doesn’t set off alarm bells, what will?

Girdusky’s comments were shocking but not surprising

That being said, if you get someone like Girdusky on the air, isn’t it just a matter of time before something like that happens? If you reach into a cage of marauders, chances are you’ll get bitten. That doesn’t make the bite hurt any less, but it does make it less surprising.

It’s similar to the argument against election deniers coming up repeatedly to falsely claim that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. I think it’s important to put them on the record, let alone invite them to continue to defend the same lies.

But what did Girdusky say? Come on. As Phillip said, a line has been crossed.

“We want to talk,” she said on air. “We want people who disagree with each other to talk to each other. But when you cross the line of total lack of civility, that’s not going to happen here on this show.”

Or any other, hopefully.
