Donald Trump responded to the “ugly” Michelle Obama: “big mistake”

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump attacked the former First Lady Michelle Obama for being “nasty” to him when he was “nice and respectful” to her.

“You know who’s mean to me? Michelle Obama, oh,” the former president told supporters at his rally on Monday in Atlanta, Georgia.

“I always tried to be so nice and respectful. Oh, oh, she opened a little bit of a—a little bit of a box. He opened a bit of something. Oh, she was ugly, woo. It shouldn’t be like that. It was a big mistake he made,” he said.

A video of the commentary was uploaded on X Monday night by user @Acyn, a senior digital editor for the liberal news site MeidasTouch. It had been viewed 568,000 times by Monday morning.

Newsweek contacted the Trump and vice presidential campaigns Kamala Harris by email for comments.

Trump’s comments come days after Obama had harsh words about Republican former president at a rally Saturday for Kamala Harris in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

“I have to ask myself, ‘why the hell is this race even close?'” Obama said. “I would lie awake at night asking myself, ‘what the hell is going on?’

She described what she saw as a double standard between the public’s high expectations of Harris compared to Trump, whose flaws she said are being ignored or treated with indifference.

“I hope you’ll forgive me if I’m a little frustrated that some of us choose to ignore the gross incompetence of Donald Trump while asking Kamala to dazzle us at every turn,” Obama said.

“I hope you’ll forgive me if I’m a little upset that we’re indifferent to his obviously erratic behavior mental declinehis history as a convicted felona known slum lord, a predator found guilty of sexual abuseall this while picking apart Kamala’s answers from interviews she doesn’t even have the guts to do, y’all,” she said.

Trump has said he does not suffer from cognitive decline and that his felony convictions are the illegitimate result of “legislation” against him. Trump disputes the finding that he was liable for sexual abuse, calling it “a made up story.”

Despite Trump’s claim that he’s “always tried to be so nice and respectful” to Obama, this isn’t the first time he’s called her “ugly,” the same word he he used to insult Hillary Clinton in 2016. The former president said Obama was mean to him in a speech he gave at the Democratic National Convention in August.

He used her appearance as a joke in a 2021 speech to donors at Mar-a-Lago, drawing a big laugh from the crowd when he referred to “Barack Hussein Obama and the very beautiful Michelle.”
