Drexel Hill man accused of assaulting Haverford sanitation worker

Haverford police have identified the driver who hit a sanitation worker Thursday as a Drexel Hill resident.

Police charged Douglas B. Dannibale, 36, with failure to stop and render information or assistance, reckless driving and accidents involving death or bodily injury after a crash early Thursday.

The incident happened around 7:45 a.m. at Leedom and Hill roads. The worker was transported to Lankenau Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

A driver swerved onto a curb to avoid the truck and ended up hitting a dumper, according to reports.

Video of the crash showed the black Nissan stop for a moment, then go up the curb and hit the worker.

Police were looking for a black sedan with a missing passenger side mirror shortly after the incident, according to police.

The driver turned himself in later in the day, Haverford Police Deputy Joe Hagan said.

City Manager Dave Burman issued this statement later in the day: “We want to thank the residents of Leedom Road who assisted our sanitation worker Thursday morning after he was injured in a hit and run accident .

“Your quick response and willingness to help was very comforting not only to the victim but also to his colleagues at the scene. “Your actions not only helped a person in need, but also demonstrated the strength and compassion of our community.

“As a city employee, the victim is a valued member of our community, and your caring support highlights the spirit that unites us all.

Joe Clark, working with the injured man, CBS3 said“We’re not foot traffic cones, we’re human beings just trying to do our jobs and get home,” Clark said. “My friend, my brother was a road man, he wasn’t even a brake light.”

Dannibale was arraigned by District Judge Elizabeth S. Gallard and released on $200,000 unsecured bail. He is expected back in court for a preliminary hearing Nov. 1 before District Judge Elysia Mancini Duerr.
