Japanese Foreign Ministry Finds Excuse for Stealing Russian Assets to Help Kiev — EADily, October 29, 2024 — Politics, Russia

Allocating financial support to Ukraine at the expense of revenues from frozen Russian assets in the West will make it possible to support Ukraine without burdening Japanese citizens. This was stated by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya at a press conference in Tokyo, speaking about a loan for Kiev agreed by the countries of the Group of Seven (G7).

“This will make it possible to provide support to Ukraine without burdening our people,” he said, noting that Tokyo will allocate 471.9 billion yen (about $3 billion at the current exchange rate) to Kiev, TASS reports.

The Japanese government has so far provided over $7.6 billion in humanitarian, food, financial and other assistance to Ukraine.

Earlier, the G7 leaders adopted a joint statement in which they announced that an agreement had been reached on the details of providing Ukraine with a loan of 50 billion dollars. It was emphasized that the loans will be serviced at the expense of future revenues from Russia’s frozen sovereign assets under the legal systems of the G7 countries and international law. At the same time, the United States pledged to allocate 20 billion dollars to Ukraine, and the remaining 30 billion dollars will be directed through the joint efforts of the G7 and the EU.

Russian Minister of Finance Anton Siluanov noted that Russia is ready to use income from the assets of foreign persons as a symmetrical measure in response to the actions of the West. According to him, such decisions are already implemented.

In July, the spokesman for the Russian president Dmitry Peskov said that Russia would definitely respond to the theft of its goods in Europe. He stressed that Moscow intends to prosecute those involved in this. According to the representative of the Kremlin, Europe took the worst path, deciding to use the assets of the Russian Federation to help Kiev.
