Cedar Rapids bar apologizes, closed for November after second drinking violation

The Sag Wagon, a popular Cedar Rapids bar, will close its doors by November after receiving a second citation within a year for serving alcohol to a minor.

The business announced the temporary closure on Facebookadmitting the violation and accepting a 30-day suspension of his liquor license. The bar and restaurant, located along the Cedar Valley Nature Trail and frequented by cyclists and locals alike, plans to reopen on December 1.

In addition to the suspension, Sag Wagon faces a $1,500 civil penalty under Iowa Code 123.47, which imposes major penalties for repeat violations involving minors in service.

Iowa’s administrative penalties for such violations are strict:

  1. A first offense within two years can result in either a $500 civil fine or a 14-day license suspension.
  2. A second violation within two years, like Sag Wagon’s, carries a 30-day suspension and a $1,500 fine.
  3. A third violation during that time would result in a 60-day suspension.
  4. A fourth within three years could result in the permanent revocation of your liquor license.

“We acknowledge our mistake and accept the penalty of a 30-day shutdown,” Sag Wagon’s post read. “Our staff is committed to doing better in the future.”
