Lombardo is activating the Nevada National Guard to support law enforcement on Election Day

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo announced he would activate a small contingent of the state’s National Guard as a precaution to support law enforcement on Election Day next week.

The governor’s office said Monday that the decision reflects Nevada’s routine preparation for past elections and is intended to ensure that all possible resources are available for any potential challenges.

“We do not expect these personnel to be deployed,” Lombardo, a Republican, said in a statement. “As a first responder, I know firsthand the importance of being prepared, and this decision reflects my commitment to election day safety and preparedness.”

Activation will be limited to supporting state and local resources on Tuesday, November 5. Sixty members will be activated on standby and stationed at National Guard facilities in Carson City and Las Vegas.

They will be available to support election day preparations such as traffic enforcement and building security. They can also coordinate and facilitate communication across the state if more support is needed.

“I share Governor Lombardo’s commitment to safety, preparedness and transparency,” Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar, the state’s top elections official and a Democrat, said in a statement. “This proactive decision helps us ensure that we have made the most of our available resources in Nevada. Our election officials and law enforcement leaders have been preparing for the November 5th election for years. This frees up their resources on election day so they can focus on holding a safe and secure election.”
