Former SC State student charged in connection with 2023 campus shooting that injured 1

ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) – The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged a former South Carolina State (SC State) student in connection with a 2023 filming on campus.

On Thursday, Oct. 24, 21-year-old Melvin Anthony Williams was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

According to arrest warrants, Williams fired a gun into a crowd of students on March 3, 2023, stabbing and injuring one person in the leg.

A few months after the shooting, SLED arrested 20-year-old Daniel Eugene Hutto. He was charged with accessory before attempted murder.

Investigators said Hutto opened his book bag and allowed the suspect to use the gun that was used to shoot into a crowd of students.

The SC State Police Department requested the investigation from SLED.

Williams was booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center.

The case will be prosecuted by the First Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
