Constituency ‘inhabited’ by Mike Amesbury MP arguing over ‘winter fuel allowance and bridge closure’

A constituent would have been knocked to the ground by Labour MP Mike Amesbury after a row about winter fuel allowance cuts and the closure of a local bridge

The Runcorn and Helsbury MP was suspended by Labor Party according to footage obtained by MailOnline It appeared to show him punching a man to the ground in an early morning altercation in Frodsham on Saturday.

The driver has been identified as 42-year-old Paul Fellows from Cheshire, with reports suggesting a “heated” discussion about closing a local bridge and reducing winter fuel allowance took place before the incident.

Mr Amesbury said he felt “threatened” and would “cooperate with any enquiries”, including any police enquiries.

A witness told The Times newspaper that there was a “heated” argument but claimed there was no physical provocation.

“He’s trying to get out of it now,” the witness said.

“My sister tried to step in and pull him back. You saw the video of how drunk he was. She was waiting for a taxi and so was the man.”

The images were called “shocking” by Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer earlier on Monday as he defended the party’s decision to suspend him.

The prime minister said the party had “moved very quickly” to respond after the footage emerged.

shooting captured two men standing face to face before the man claimed to be Mr Amesbury he hit the other and continued to knock him to the ground as others shouted, “stop!”

It’s not clear from the video what happened in the moments before.

Separate images posted on social media on Saturday appeared to show the lawmaker shouting and pointing at a man lying in the street.

“You’re never going to threaten me again, are you? You’re never going to threaten me again, are you?” he seemed to say.

Sidestepping the question of whether Mr Amesbury should stand down as an MP, Sir Keir said earlier: “I have seen the footage, it is shocking.

“We moved very quickly to suspend him as a member and as a Member of Parliament.

“There is now a police investigation and in the circumstances you will appreciate I cannot say much about it.”

Cheshire Police confirmed that a 55-year-old man was voluntarily interviewed as a precaution in relation to the incident after officers were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham at 2.48am on Saturday.

“He has since been released pending further enquiries,” the force said.

Mr Amesbury said on Saturday he would “cooperate with any inquiry” but was “determined to remain an open and accessible MP to our community” after the initial footage circulated online.

He said in a statement: “Last night, I was involved in an incident that occurred after I felt threatened in the street following an outing with friends.

“This morning I personally contacted Cheshire Police to report what happened during the incident.

“I will make no further public comment but I will of course co-operate with any inquiries if asked by Cheshire Police.”

A Labor spokesman said: “Mike Amesbury MP has been assisting Cheshire Police with their inquiries following an incident on Friday night.

“As these inquiries are ongoing, the Labor Party has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labor Party pending an investigation.”

Mr Amesbury was part of Labour’s shadow ministerial team from 2018 to 2024 but failed to secure a backbencher role after the election.
