Election Day 2024: Philadelphians warned deadline to apply for mail-in ballot closes in

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia City Commissioner Lisa Deeley is warning those who want to vote by mail to get their application in before Tuesday’s deadline.

“If you don’t have to wait until the last minute, you shouldn’t wait until the last minute,” Deeley explained.

This means that the application must be received by your county commissioner’s office by 5pm on Tuesday.

Pennsylvania does not currently have early voting, it would take a law to change that.

Many, however, cast their ballots by mail. I do it in person at a county commissioner’s office or in satellite offices.

“We request it, fill it out and hand it over just to make sure everything is there. Nothing unforeseen can happen on Election Day,” said Robert Durso of Fairmount, who voted by mail.

States that have early voting tabulate the votes. In Pennsylvania, all ballots — including mail-in and absentee ballots — cannot be counted until Election Day.

Frank Barrett told Action News he didn’t like how long the mail-in ballot took in 2020.

“We did this in 2020 And it took 8 days to be counted, we did it by mail,” said Barrett, who came to vote via a mail-in ballot.

The deadline to request postal ballots is October 29 at 5 p.m. You can send a mail-in ballot as long as it arrives at your county office by 8:00 p.m.

Or you can send it to a drop box, county commissioner’s office or satellite office.

More than 60% of people in our region returned their mail-in ballots, according to the 6abc data team.

Mail-in ballots with mistakes or undelivered ballots can be fixed.

There is a list at the commissioner’s office of the people who wrote mistakes on the ballots. Anyone who needs to fix a ballot can go and do it in person.

“If you’re waiting for a postal ballot to come and you haven’t applied for one, you won’t get one. If you are someone who is anticipating receiving a ballot and you haven’t, then please check and make sure you have applied,” Deely advised.
