KINSTON, NC (WITN) – A mother has been charged after east side police say she left her child unattended in a vehicle last week.

Thursday morning, Kinston Police say officers were called to the 300 block of N. Adkin Street for a two-year-old child left alone in a vehicle.

There, officers spoke with one of the child’s relatives who said they found him in the backseat of Shameka McNeil’s vehicle.

Officers discovered the child had been left in the vehicle for approximately six hours.

Police say the child is safe and unharmed.

McNeil was arrested and the 32-year-old woman faces child abuse and contributing to neglect of a minor charges.

She is being held at the Lenoir County Jail on a secured bond.
