Westlake dominates defensively to beat SA Brennan

Westlake reached the Class 6A Division I regional semifinals thanks to a dominant defensive effort.

The Chaps suffocated San Antonio Brennan all game, holding him to less than 130 yards of offense, most of which came on a 75-yard halfback pass, a blocked punt that led to a short touchdown drive and were efficient enough on offense to take. a 24-7 victory in an area-round playoff game Friday at Burger Stadium.

Brennan (10-2) only got into Westlake territory twice.

Hayes Brodhead’s blocked punt put Westlake on the Bears’ 1-yard line late in the first quarter, and two plays later, Wise hit Cullen Devine — normally a defensive lineman — for an open 3-yard TD pass meters.

Wise’s 4-yard run to cap off a 58-yard drive late in the second quarter put the Chaps up 14-0 at halftime. His 2-yard TD plunge in the third quarter capped a nearly identical drive that bled more than five minutes off the clock.

Noah Bartlett’s 24-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter gave Westlake a 24-0 lead before Cayden Glass’ 1-yard run after the halfback’s pass accounted for the score Bears.

Westlake (11-1) will play either former district opponent Johnson or Los Fresnos in the regional semifinals.
