Marshaun Jones’ family speaks out after 14-year-old is killed

MARION OAKS, Fla. (WCJB) – “The house is very quiet. You can feel the change.”

This is what the mother of 14-year-old Marshaun Jones had to say about her son. Phyllis Williams’ grandmother says Jones’ friends left him alone after he was shot.

“Then he locked the door. After shooting him, he locked the door and ran home. The boys came here and told us, but she ran home.” Williams said

Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Jada Spence, 15, from the same neighborhood as Jones.

MCSO deputies say they got different versions of the story from Spence and at one point they say they finally learned the truth.

“She stated that she was playing with the gun with someone else and when the gun fell, she discharged and shot him. But with further interviews with witnesses it turned out that was not the case.” said public information officer Valerie Strong.

Instead, investigators say the teenagers were playing with a gun and Spence fired it, thinking it was unloaded.

Jones’ mother, Donshea Jones, told TV20 her family still hasn’t heard from Spence’s parents — not even an apology.

“As a mother, as a parent, you should have come. You should have said I’m sorry, even if you think we didn’t mean to hear it, you should have made an effort.” Jones said.

Jones’ mother also tells TV20 that Spence was on parole when the shooting happened.

“I knew he went in on a probation violation, but once I saw the article and everything today, I’m not going to lie, I was happy.” Jones said.

She also tells TV20 that she was relieved when she found out about the arrest.

“I’m not going to lie, I was happy. I was very happy because now I see that justice is starting to be done for my son. He didn’t deserve to die. He was young and he was with friends he thought he could trust.” Jones said.

As the investigation continues, Marshaun’s mother says she will continue to fight for her son demanding answers and justice. It is up to the State’s Attorney to determine whether Spence will be charged as an adult.
