Student arrested with a firearm at Davenport North charged as an adult

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – The 16-year-old who police say had a gun on him at North High School earlier this week made his first court appearance Thursday.

The student was arrested Wednesday for having a firearm at school.

A Davenport Police School Resource Officer at North High School received information around 1:30 pm Wednesday that a student may have a firearm at the school.

The student was called out of the classroom and the officer located a firearm in the student’s possession.

Davenport police said the quick actions helped maintain a safe learning environment. There was no disruption to the school day, no threats were made and the school was not locked down.

Court records show bond was set at $5,000 cash only, and he has a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

The Davenport Police Department worked closely with Davenport Community School District leadership and North High School administration to ensure student and staff safety as well as building security.

The Davenport School Board discussed the purchase and installation of weapon detection and door monitoring systems at Monday’s council meeting.
