Woman pleads not guilty to stealing $700,000 from Queanbeyan workplace through illegitimate invoices and extra pay

An alleged fraudster has denied stealing more than $700,000 from a small Queanbeyan plumbing business he worked for.

Rebecca Leigh Betts, 32, was charged with three counts of theft of property as a public servant and five counts of dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception in October.

The Latham woman is accused of taking a total of $736,778 while working as a clerk for Pro Plumbing and Gasfitting.

She is accused of nominating herself as the recipient of illegitimate invoices, paying herself an additional salary and making unauthorized charges to the company’s accounts between April 2021 and October 2023.

The woman briefly faced Queanbeyan Local Court on Monday, where she pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Court documents allege Ms Betts nominated herself as the payee of 112 illegitimate invoices while working as a clerk for the business, totaling $620,071 and paying herself an additional salary of $55,626.

She is also accused of charging the car’s maintenance cost back to her employer and making personal purchases from the company’s trading accounts with Bunnings and Officeworks.

The documents also allege that the accused used the plumbing company’s fuel card, deceiving them that it had been destroyed.

He also allegedly stole a welding kit.

NSW Police brought in a prosecutor specializing in financial crimes of this magnitude to assist with the case.

Ms Betts will remain on bail until the matter returns to court next year.
